Get back to your roots in the North West Province
The North West Province contains some of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The Cradle of Humankind near the Sterkfontein Caves boasts the remains of some of the oldest human settlements found, not to mention some of the oldest humanoid fossils. A state-of-the-art centre has been built near the site. Visitors to the centre can explore the museum of fossils – exhibits are rotated regularly – visit the digs themselves and go on a mind-altering ride back through time.
In addition to its historical importance, the North West Province is also home to the Sun City and Lost City resorts. For decades South Africans have been flocking to Sun City to gamble at the impressive casino and play golf at the world-renowned Gary Player golf course. The hotels have always been famed for their luxury, while self-catering facilities provide more affordable accommodation options. When the Lost City came along, luxury was taken to new highs. The hotel is one of the most luxurious in Africa. It's so luxurious that SA-born actress Charlize Theron agreed to feature in their advertising campaigns.
Near the resorts is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, where visitors can see the Big 5, stay in luxury accommodation and enjoy self-drive safaris, as well as guided day and night drives.
Culturally speaking, the province provides a number of opportunities to experience traditional African life in several cultural villages that celebrate the diverse tribes that originally called the province home. Some cultural villages even offer overnight accommodation so that you can get the full experience.
The Hartbeespoort Dam is perfect for water sports, hang-gliding and hot air ballooning. The dam is nestled within the Magaliesberg Mountains, which also offers amazing hiking opportunities.
