Welcome to the Mountain Kingdom
Not for nothing is Lesotho known as the Mountain Kingdom. It's one of the highest countries in the world, with one of the highest national parks. Sehlabathebe National Park is located around 3000m above sea level and is virtually inaccessible by motorised transport, even 4x4. What it lacks in big game it makes up for in mountainous beauty and the curious little minnow-like fish that was thought to be extinct until it showed up swimming in a Lesotho river.
The mountains are, of course, Lesotho's biggest attraction, with climbers and hikers coming from all over the world to pit themselves against the mighty slopes. Those who don't like to ascend to such heights under their own steam can enjoy a leisurely ride on the back of a Basotho pony. The sturdy little beasts negotiate even the most hair-raising of paths with ease.
In winter, skiing takes over as the activity of choice with many lodges and resorts springing up to take advantage of the generous snow falls. The Lesotho government has also recognised the region's potential as a ski destination and is investing in ventures to ensure its fair share of the winter tourism trade.
If mountains really aren't your thing you can always stay in Maseru and explore its surrounds, which include the ruins of Thaba Bosiu and several paleontological digs. The city also boasts two casinos, both of which have luxury hotels and a range of kiddie-friendly activities to keep kids entertained while their parents enjoy some more adult entertainment.
If you like a spot of culture you might want to time your visit to coincide with the Morija Arts and Cultural Festival. There are two parts: the smaller of the two is the Morija Festival Cultural Competition in October, while the main event takes place in April. The April festival occurs over three days and features performing arts, dancing, live music, traditional and contemporary dancing, as well as food stalls, kiosks and exhibits.
