Motheo district is the Free State’s industrial hub. It houses Bloemfontein and South Africa’s second largest township, Botshabelo. Thaba ‘Nchu is the Free State’s premier gambling destination, and there are a number of nature reserves, including the Caledon Nature and Franklin Nature Reserves.
The Northern Free State is rustic and charming; it’s proximity to the Vaal River allows for the full spectrum of water-based activities. It’s also home to one of South Africa’s prestigious World Heritage Sites, the Vredefort Dome, which the location of the largest and oldest meteorite impact site in the world.
Thabo Mofutsanyana district is known for its mountainous beauty. It marks the place where the Malutis meet the Drakensberg. Attractions include hiking, fly-fishing and numerous historical battle sites, not to mention the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, a Basotho Cultural Village and the privately owned Mount Everest Game Reserve, among others.
Xhariep Region is dry and sparsely populated but is becoming known as the perfect getaway for harried professionals. It is where the Karoo desert begins and it lies on the banks of the Orange River. Attractions include the Gariep Dam, the ‘Eye’ of Zastron and the Tankwa-Karoo National Park.
